oh obsessions.

sometimes they are fruitless,

ending in hours spent trolling the internet for photos and information.

and other times...

times like this...

I become motivated to the point of creation.

moved by his brilliant color schemes,

I cleaned and dyed half a merino fleece,

blended bunches of batts,

spun yards and yards of singles

and then plied and plied.

Fallen in Love with a Fleece

Seven pounds of luscious merino locks

wrapped up in an old bed sheet

it was shoved in a closet

traveled with me through three moves 

(including a cross country move)

and I wonder... how the heck did I ignore it that long? 

 There is very little vegetable matter,

the lanolin washed out fairly easily 

(I use baking soda and Bright Green dish soap)

and it absorbs dye beautifully.

I can thank Ewe & Me Merinos for selling me on this fleece at the NY Sheep & Wool festival. I always get really anxious because there is so much to look at, so many beautiful works of fiber art, and way too many possible fiber purchases (not to mention the amount of people, everyone swimming through the wave of other humans) I usually feel like I've forgotten to go back to a certain artist/farm booth as I sit in the festival traffic and travel the two hours home.

 

This was a super score.

I do hope I can get ahold of them and order more!

I finally bagged my first phat fiber box!!!

the last few months, the boxes always went on sale while I was working. so even though I don't necessarily have the money right now, I didn't know when I'd get another opportunity. besiiiides, the theme is Master Painters!! how could I resist??

I tried to nab the first release (10am EST) but every time I clicked the listing, I was sent to the "sold out" page. so I waited around (and by "waited around", I mean "dyed a butt-ton of fiber") until the next release (7pm EST).

I was armed and ready at 6:49.

had my fingers glued to my keyboard commands

(command R to refresh, command down arrow to go to the bottom of the page)

so for 11 minutes I had my eyes glued 5 inches from my screen, anticipation running through my veins.

as soon as the Fluff box popped up, I whizzed through the buying process,

nervous that someone could snatch it from my fingertips at any moment.

but I got it!

and I am BEYOND excited!

by far the most I've ever been overwhelmed by amazing craftsmanship. this festival was so big, with so many vendors. it took us 5 hours to walk around and I'm not even sure we saw everything. then it took another hour to go through again trying to find the vendors I wanted to buy from.

so I gave myself a hundred dollar budget... and I went over by 2 bucks. hehe

1lb 50/50 romney/mohair blend. such luscious colors! and by far the softest romney I've ever felt.

1lb gorgeous teal and moss corriedale

4oz (carded) yellow and (loose) pink cotton.

2oz silk noils and silk waste

2 silk caps. this picture does not do justice to the gorgeous colors

8oz random bag of wool, mohair, angora and alpaca. and glitz!

I went in there with the mindset that I wanted to buy fibers that I have yet to work with, and I succeeded for the most part!
